Army service (for 1 year) is more or less mandatory, all boys (or in some cases men) are called in for evaluation, but more than 50% are discharged due to health condition, other civil commitments or being a general crybaby. I applied for under-officer school which means you have to serve two years.
The sheep was selling sekrits to Sweden, which is much worse. Denmark is pathetic and harmless, they don't even know how to go cross-country skiing!
(For the one or two persons reading this who wants to know what it really was I can tell you that it was a lesson in how to safely, kill and prepare farm animals for eating in a crisis situation, that is war. The veterinarian executed the sheep, but every single one of us had to chop the head of a hen.)
IDF is mandatory also. but our conscription is two to three years. depending on your service agreement. Four and a half months (or 1 month, if non-combat job). arms training, first aid, close combat, self defense, navigation, camouflage, learning defense systems against biological weapons etc.
Active IDF Service Nine months of active IDF service (or twelve and a half months if non-combat job). You can opt for lengthening of your active IDF service for as much as you want. i of course was an idiot and took a combat job.
when i left the force i was a full staff Sgt. (must be why i'm such a good leader)
and their is really only two ways to get out of it.
be ultra Orthodox religious or leave the country before your 18. (don't return until your 35).
and we do the same thing with farm animals. except we use Palestinians.
