And some of Avenged's earlier albums are tolerable.
Some of those European metal bands sing in English, too - for all us second-language-impaired Americans. Blind Guardian is the one I know best. Some of their songs are unintelligible without the lyric sheet, but they also have some really good stuff that is completely clear and lacks screaming - "The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight," "Lord of the Rings," and a good chunk of the songs on their Nightfall in Middle Earth album (which is still my favorite of theirs, though aNatO has some great stuff).
Hell, even Metallica and Iron Maiden have some lyrically beautiful (and not musically overbearing) songs.
