Don't feel obligated to drink in college. I found that there is a correlation between "people who get trashed every weekend" and "people who flunk out of school in the first year of college." While I'm a moderate drinker now, at 30, I didn't drink at all until the end of my last year of college and didn't actually get drunk until I was out of college. I never understood the obsession, so I didn't see any reason. While I enjoy my beer, wine, and occasional mixed drinks, and while I even get legitimately drunk a few times a year, I still don't understand why people make such a big deal out of the experience.
It's an acquired taste. In moderation, it can produce a pleasant buzz. In excess, it has about the effects of food poisoning with the added entertainment of having to run to the bathroom while dizzy and the misery of a terrible headache the next morning. In general, my favorite acquired taste is coffee - a buzz that makes me think more quickly instead of more slowly, and you only get mild hangover symptoms even if you overindulge to fairly ludicrous levels.
