No country is completelty communist/planned or completelty democratic. Most countries have a mix of both. Take britain for example, its a democracy but with many services provided for free by the government so is a mix between a market (democratic) economy and a planned economy.
'Communist countries' are not completely planned as they trade with the outside world and have some scope for social advancement and a class system. America is closer to a market economy than most as the government provide few free services to its people.
