I carry both but I also don't like to spend a lot of time in mall sieges. So if some day you are going to move away from protection of malls, and ammo actually does become hard to come by the knife will play a valid role in conserving both ammo and AP. If you stay close to the mall all you probably need is an axe. Even if you only fought in mall sieges you should always carry an axe it only takes up one slot and it makes for the best over all melee back up weapon in the game.
