You can only play some games with a silver membership. Think "player" matches and some private ones with friends, but on the whole you can't play online with a silver membership.
Gold membership allows you to play online, join "party" chats and what not. The cost of a gold membership puts people off of buying a 360, but it's really not that bad when you think it's only a few quid a month.
But yeah, you'll need a gold membership to play most games online. Sorry bud
