Traditionally,churches were built with an fire exit on either side of the alter, to comply with ye olde health and safety. As it was cold in yesteryear they were allowed to lock one entrance, tradionally the left (because of the masons) which left the only escape route to the right. This is why the groom stands on the right, in case of wedding day freak out and the compulsive need to be somewhere else. I'm sure that wont be an issue with you though Mel.
