I've been teaching myself to speak the language for almost three years now. Practice is practice, though now I don't quite need it.

You could always use a translator site...despite how lame they may be...

Why would I use a translator when I can speak it fluently?

Ohh, Neil Stephenson! Awesome book, read it 4 times or something now, but I'm not quite sure I'm getting the comparison. Sure, there where not really any rules in that society, but that kinda depended on where you were and where you had access. Anyway, please do tell.
German ain't that hard to understand you know, I kinda get it, and I haven't learned any at all. Though that's probably because of similarities in language and whatnot.

Sure, there where not really any rules in that society, but that kinda depended on where you were and where you had access. Anyway, please do tell. you're right, Stephanson's "Snow Crash" is actually an anarcho-capitalist state (sort of), but I brought it up as an example because it's probably the closest thing to a "pure democracy" that America could evolve into. Whenever I talk about that book, I always get hungry for pizza...

And when I think of "pure democracy", I think of a country with no laws. Wait...there is none...

When I think of democracy, I think of sex. Politics make me horny.

And when I think of "pure democracy", I think of a country with no laws. Wait...there is none... Generally, a "pure democracy" would have laws...they would be enforced by a police force and an executive arm of governance, just like now...the only difference is that every person would take a crack at voting on every issue, and a simple majority would decide everything... it sounds nice, but it's a really scary prospect.

I have to ask what you thought of The Diamond Age then Padre? First time I read it I found it a bit boring because of the different tempo from Snow Crash, but I re-read it not too long ago, and it's now equally good, if not even better in my mind.
And pizza would actually be good about now ;D

No country is completelty communist/planned or completelty democratic. Most countries have a mix of both. Take britain for example, its a democracy but with many services provided for free by the government so is a mix between a market (democratic) economy and a planned economy.
'Communist countries' are not completely planned as they trade with the outside world and have some scope for social advancement and a class system. America is closer to a market economy than most as the government provide few free services to its people.
