I've had some irate discussions about folks who consider rap music unsophisticated. You look at even the messiest of modern rap, something produced by the beasty boys or Dr. Dre, and you can find quite easily that all the rules they followed in the 18-19th century (Which, for some reason, produced all the "smart" music) are still there. In fact, outcast's most recent album is more traditional than a maverick like Haydn. Rap's lyrics may not convey a lot...I've even shown up my music teacher on this...you have to ask yourself, what's the meaning behind Beethoven's 5th symphony, or Motzart's many, many piano concertos...music doesn't have to convey meaning...

Very true.
My issue w/ rap isn't so much w/ its supposed lack of "sophistication" as it is w/ the many artists who use it to convey several distinctly negative messages.

Also very true. Unfortunately, just about anything has its good and bad aspects. I'm probably a rarity among someone in my age bracket that I tend to be what people call a "conformist" (although most of the people who call me that don't realize that peer pressure is just as much a form of conformity, disguised as something "trendy"), which tends to color my view somewhat, I suppose.

Not to butt in on you guys' conversation, but I actually find most current, American rap boring. I mostly listen to British rap now, as they aren't going on about how great they are and how lame everyone else is. I like some American rap because it's really funny or interesting, but most of it is not worth my time to listen to. The British rappers I listen to talk about everything from the P.L.O. to girls with fake tans.

Personally I won't hold someone's musical tastes against them (unless they say something along the lines of "teh beatless sux lolololololol!!!!11!!!1!!111!!! ). Some of my RL best friends listen to rap, in fact. And I must agree w/ Lach--most American rap is not worth wasting one's time on

On a completely different note...Sorry Hec! we didn't get your joke at first because, due to protracted sieges, there aren't currently any angels in the Angell building!
All angels: There really is a crate of Kahlua in the Angell building...come, have some.

its 18 art but its not enforced very well. You can get served in most places at 16 (15 if you have a fake beard of a shirt) and the most the police will do is pour your drink away which is rare
